Cleft lip and palate is a congenital birth defect that involves not only the lip and palate but also the surrounding structures like the nose, maxilla and the teeth.
The cleft varies in severity and could be unilateral or bilateral.
Ideally, a team composed of different specialties and related health professionals is needed in the total care and management of the patient.
Usually the repair of the cleft lip is done separately from the cleft palate. The repair of the cleft lip is usually recommended at the age of 3 months and up, while cleft palate is between 8 to 18 months. Multiple surgical procedures may also be needed to achieve the desired goals. However, more often than not, the parents are satisfied with the result of the first surgery and no subsequent surgeries are needed.
